Type species: Tinea signella Hübner, 1796 .
Diagnosis. Adult with wingspan usually running from 11.0 to 25.0 mm. Agonopterix can be distinguished by the second segment of the labial palpus with scales on ventral surface usually sulcate longitudinally along midline, forewing with R 4 and R 5 long stalked, CuA 1 and CuA 2 short stalked, and the hindwing as wide or wider than the forewing; in the male genitalia by the spinuous gnathos, the slenderly banded transtilla in most species, the hairy transtilla lobes usually dilated, the sacculus having an apical cuiller, and the cornuti consisting of many fine spinules; in the female genitalia by the long membranous ductus bursae with dense granules, and the granulous corpus bursae usually with a signum.
