Pollex (Proma) maxima View in CoL Fibiger, new species

( Plate 11 View PLATE 11 , figs 4, 5; male genit. plate 20, figure 5, female genit. plate 26, figure 6)

Material examined.

Holotype: male, [ Indonesia], Java occ., Sindan Glaya , 1882. Coll. RMNH.

Paratypes: 1 male, 1 female: 1 female with same data as holotype, genit. prep. 3908 M. Fibiger ; 1 male, [ Indonesia], Java, Mega Mendong , 1880, genit. prep. 3901 M. Fibiger. Colls MF, RMNH .

Diagnosis.

Wingspan: 15 mm.

Forewing: relatively broad and long, brown, with costa blackish brown in medial area.

Transverse lines: black (basal and antemedial), or brown (postmedial and subterminal); terminal line marked by black dots between veins.

Reniform: distinct, whitish grey, outlined by black.

Hindwing: unicolorous brown with an indistinct, black discal spot.

Underside: unicolorous brown.

Male genitalia.

Tegumen: narrow.

Vinculum: short, stout.

Saccus: U-shaped, short.

Fultura superior: ventrally with a huge processs, which apically ends as two small processes; ventrally fused with lower part of tegumen and dorsal end of juxta-anellus plate.

Valve: slightly longer than wide.

Ampulla: positioned medially on distal end of valve; on both sides finger-like, bent, equally long throughout; subapically densely setose with long hair-like setae bent inwards.

Pollex : broad-based, relatively long, longer than ampulla, tapered to point; subapically and outwards densely setose with long hair-like setae bent inwards.

Digitus: slightly longer than pollex, tapered, bent subbasally, curving ventrally apically; apically blunt. Juxta-anellus plate: large, higher than wide.

Phallus: very long, slightly curved, slightly tapered towards apex; coecum short and broad.

Vesica: with a short thorn-like cornutus.

Female genitalia.

Membrane between 9 th– 10 th and 8 th abdominal segment: with a small, wide plate, probably serving a pheromone function.

8 th abdominal segment: narrow, heavily fused with 7 th segment, ventrally extended anteriorly up 7 th segment, close to 6 th segment.

7 th abdominal segment: heavily sclerotised; asymmetrical, with lateral swellings.

Anterior apophyses: length 1½ of posterior apophyses.

Position of ostium bursae: located anteriorly on 7 th segment near posterior margin of 6 th segment; 6 th and 7 th segments heavily fused; ostium slightly displaced to left.

Antrum: cylindrical, heavily sclerotised basally, moderately sclerotised anteriorly.

Ductus bursae: with several coils; membranous, long, 3 X longer than corpus bursae.

Corpus bursae: globular.

Appendix bursae: arising anteriorly from ductus bursae immediately after antrum.

Differential diagnosis.

P. maxima differs from other species of Pollex by the huge ventrally directed process from the fultura superior, the much longer, narrower ampulla and pollex, and the armed phallus.
