Type Locality: "südlichen Amerika", restricted by J. A. Allen (1919 b:356), to "Cayenne" [ French Guiana] .

Vernacular Names: Oncilla.

Distribution: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Nicaragua (?), Panama, Paraguay (?), Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Endangered; IUCN – Near Threatened.

Discussion: Placed in Leopardus by J. A. Allen (1919 b), Weigel (1961), and Kratochvíl (1982 c); placed in Oncifelis (with guigna and geoffroyi ) by Hemmer (1978). L. tigrinus shares a derived chromosomal number with pardalis and wiedii ( Wurster-Hill, 1973) . Includes Felis pardinoides after Cabrera (1958); however, see J. A. Allen (1919 b) and Weigel (1961) who considered pardinoides as distinct, but closely related to tigrinus . Synonyms allocated according to Pocock (1941 c), Cabrera (1957), and Hall (1981).
