Type Locality: "Nous ne savons pas au juste dans quelle partie du globe a été trouvé"; fixed by Van Mensch and Van Bree (1969) to "probably the coastal region of Lower Guinea (Between Cross River and River Congo...)".

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Revised by Van Mensch and Van Bree (1969). Placed in Profelis by Pocock (1917 a), Weigel (1961), Hemmer (1978), Kratochvíl (1982 c), and Groves (1982 a). Král and Zima (1980) placed it in Felis . Synonyms allocated according to G. M. Allen (1939).
