Polytes nigrovittatus Eger , new species ( Fig. 25-30 View Fig )
Description. Dorsum reddish brown, blending to black anteriorly and laterally on pronotum and anteriorly on scutellum; head entirely black. Pale orange border present on anterior and anterolateral margins of pronotum, lateral margins of coria basally, and lateral margins of connexiva. Punctation dense, concolorous to red, most with greenish sheen. Venter stramineous with black markings as follows: head, antennae, bulk of rostrum, legs (coxae and femora basally and ventrally, brown), disk of pro- and mesopleura, evaporative area, bulk of first visible abdominal sternite, mesial vitta on abdomen, macules posterad of and adjacent to each spiracle, and base of genital cup. Ventral punctation moderately dense on head and thorax, indistinct on abdomen. Length: 9.3.
Head broadly rounded anteriorly, 2.1 long, 3.1 broad across eyes. Lateral margins of juga flattened, angulate. Antennae black; length of segments 1-5: 0.7; 0.7; 0.8; 1.3; 1.6. Rostrum reaching posterior margin of 2nd visible abdominal sternite.
Pronotum 2.9 long mesially, 5.9 wide across humeri. Anterolateral margins slightly convex, flattened. Osteolar rugae not longer than width of osteoles; distance from osteole to anterolateral corner of metapleuron 1.3; distance from osteole to metacoxae 1.2.
Scutellum 5.0 long mesially, 5.0 broad at widest point. Connexiva dark brown mesially, broadly stramineous laterally. Sternites convex. Spiracles brown.
Ventral surface of male genital cup moderately punctate, with shallow, transverse impression ( Fig. 25 View Fig ); posterior margin broadly concave mesially, convex laterally ( Fig. 26 View Fig ). Parameres hookshaped, shank short; head elongate, posterior margin with distinct spiculate keel ( Fig. 30 View Fig ). First conjunctival diverticula large, membranous. Sclerotized apices of 2nd conjunctival diverticula simple, acute apically, lacking well-defined base ( Fig. 29 View Fig ). Sclerotized apices of 3rd conjunctival diverticula elongate, bifurcate, with additional small denticles ( Fig. 28 View Fig ).
Type Material. HOLOTYPE: 6, labeled: (a) " Oxapampa, Peru. " This specimen is missing the terminal two segments on the right antennae, the left hind leg, and the tarsi on the other left legs. Deposited in RNH. No paratypes.
Distribution. Peru, known only from the holotype.
Comment. This species superficially resembles P. velutinus in dorsal coloration but is more closely related to P. tigrinus . It is named for the ventral black vitta on the abdomen.
