Type Locality: Argentina, San Juan Prov., Los Sombreros, Sierra Tontal, 3,800 m.
Vernacular Names: Sierra del Tontal Chinchilla Rat.
Distribution: Known from the Sierra del Tontal of southern San Juan Prov., Argentina.
Discussion: Ellerman (1940) considered shistacea a subspecies of cinerea but Braun and Mares (2002) recognized it as distinct.
