Refs.: Blanchard, 1852: 352 (redescr., as Rhyphus ); Philippi, 1865: 633 (list); Costa, 1866: 40 (as Ryphus , error!); Walker, 1874: 36 (as Rhyphus , in Rhyphidae ); Bigot, 1888: 11 (list); Reed, 1888: 283 (cat.); Hunter, 1900: 298 (cat.); Kertész, 1902: 306 (cat.); Edwards, 1923: 483 (near to Anisopus undulatus Lamb ); Edwards, 1928: 13 (com.), 15 (in key); Edwards, 1930: 117 (redescr., male terminalia figs. 27–29); Stuardo, 1946: 39 (cat., as Anisopus ); Hennig, 1955: 21 (list as Phryne ); Papavero, 1967: 2 (cat., as Sylvicola ); Smith, 1987: 79 (distr., as Anisopus ); Baylac & Matile, 1988: 84 (com., as Anisopus ); Amorim & Tozoni, 1994: 532 (list, as Tonnoirina ); Michelsen 1999: 70 (as Sylvicola , implicitly by synonymy of Tonnoirina ); Eberhard, 2004: 126 (as Anisopus , error by using an old denomination).

Comments. Macquart’s (1838) original description includes a drawing (pl. 11, fig. 2) that is quite detailed for features on the wing, scutum and abdomen. It is questionable, nevertheless, if all references to S. fuscipennis (Macquart) correspond to specimens conspecific with the type. Costa (1866: 40) list one specimen of this species in the Camilo Rondani Collection, now at MZUN, and it may be of interest if the type specimen of Rhyphus fuscipennis Macquart is not located.
