TYPE LOCALITY. — Bathoxiphus steineri : 10°51’S, 145°49’E, northeast Thursday Island , 1379 m GoogleMaps . — Bathoxiphus stanisici : off Cairns , northern Queensland, 16°43.06’S, 146°37.18’E, 1477 m GoogleMaps .
NEW MATERIAL EXAMINED. — The type material of B. steineri and B. stanisici .
DISTRIBUTION. — Global distribution: northern Fiji Basin, Samoa and Palau ( Chistikov 1983), New Caledonia and northeastern Australia, in 978-1777 m (Lamprell & Healy 1998; as B. stanisici and B. steineri ). Distribution in the New Caledonian region: Loyalty Basin and Loyalty Ridge, live in 1508-3680 m. No new records.
REMARKS. — Examination of the types of B. steineri and B. stanisici confirmed their synonymy and correspondence of the Australian specimens to Chistikov’s highly characteristic species, despite the fact that his types appear to be lost (Y. Kantor, pers. comm.).
