ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The LIFOU 2000 expedition was made possible by a grant from the Total Foundation to Philippe Bouchet, and

all deep-sea surveys were carried out on board IRD’s R.V. Alis under the care of Bertrand Richer de Forges. I am very grateful to Philippe Bouchet for his continuous support, to Philippe Maestrati for his help in accessing the material and logistic assistance, and to Virginie Héros for her very thorough editorial work on various drafts of this paper. I also thank the following for the loan of material that was directly or indirectly involved in generating the present contribution as well as for allowing access to collections: Jerry Harasewych (USNM), Kathie Way (BMNH), Matthias Glaubrecht (ZMB), Ian Loch (AMS), John Stanisic (QM). For numerous improvements on the manuscritpt I am also sincerely grateful to Robert H. Cowie (University of Hawaii), Alan Beu (Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences, Lower Hutt, New Zealand) and Alexander Sysoev (Zoological Museum of Moscow State University, Russia).
