Subgenus 3. Rubus View in CoL
Stems usually biennial, woody, at least in the lower part. Leaves 3–5-foliolate, rarely 6–7-foliolate, middle leaflet on a long petiole, stipules petiolate. Flowers numerous, hermaphrodite. Receptacle conical. Fruits black or sometimes black-red with a bluish bloom. Drupes numerous, fused with receptacle.

Stems arcuate, rooting at the top in autumn, glabrous or pubescent, angular, with equal uniform, flattened prickles, usually on angles, without stalked glands. Leaves and sepals white-felted beneath, recurved in fruits.
Series 1. Gypsocaulones Müller ex Sudre (1861: 309; 1903: 5).
Annual shoots arcuately curved, with a bluish bloom, usually felt pubescent; leaves 5-foliate, with an admixture of 3- foliolate, relatively small, leathery, unevenly sharply toothed. Inflorescence elongate, strong, mostly many-flowered.
