Stems biennial with prickles, often also with bristles or glands. Leaves simple or more often trifoliolate or pinnate, occasionally palmate; stipules petiolate, linear. Fruit red, easily separated from the conical receptacle and hollow inside; stone wrinkled.

Stems erect or prostrate, with prickles short or acicular, often glandular; usually biennial, developing flowering shoots in the second year. Leaves imparipinnate, 3–7-foliolate; leaflets usually medium-sized, pubescent below or usually appressed-white-tomentose. Flowers small or medium in size, 0.5–2 cm in diameter.
