Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Achiv[us] alphenor Cramer, 1776: 141 , 151, pl.90, fig. B [original plate 55, fig. A]. ♀, China .
Papilio Eques View in CoL Achivus alphenor, Stoll, 1782b: 3 [No. 11].
Material examined. 1 ♂, with Felder label ‘Amboina Coll Eyndhoven’ and ‘alphenor [v Amboin… B.97 – barely legible]’ ( BMNH (E)#665391); it has been repinned, repaired and touched with paint. Although only the female was illustrated, both sexes are discussed in the text. However, it is very doubtful that the above male is a syntype. There is a possible syntype ♀ in RNHL .
Current status. Valid subspecies of Papilio (Menelaides) polytes Linnaeus, 1758 ( Page & Treadaway, 2004).
( FIG. 3 View Figures 3–8 )
Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Troj[anus] amosis Cramer, 1780a: 139 , 173, pl.269, figs A, B [original plate 239, figs A, A]. ‘m’a été envoyé de Suriname’ [this was sent to me from Surinam].
Papilio Eques Trojanus View in CoL amosis, Stoll, 1782b: 2 [No. 42].
Material examined. Syntype ♀ ( BMNH (E)#665036) with van Lennep label ‘No.42. AMOSIS. Cr. III. 269. C. D.’ and Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ is a good match for original plate 239, figs A, A; it has a damaged thorax and may have been re-pinned (N.B. the reference to figs C and D on the label is a repeat of an error in Stoll, 1782) . Syntype ♀ with Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665038) is a better match for original plate 239, figs A, A, and is in a similar condition, except that the abdomen is missing. Possible syntype ♀ with Felder label ‘ Surinam Coll. Lenep’ ( BMNH (E)#665037) has much less extensive red markings and has been re-pinned, possibly twice. All three have been touched with paint . 1♀ ( BMNH (E)#665044)) with the same data does not agree with Cramer’s figure because it has a large pale spot on the forewing. There is also a similar female labelled ‘ Surinam Coll. Eyndhoven’ ( BMNH (E)#665387) .
Current status. Junior subjective synonym of Papilio (Heraclides) hyppason Cramer, 1775 ( Tyler et al., 1994; attrib. hyppason to Stoll).
( FIG. 4 View Figures 3–8 )
Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Troj[anus] amphimedon Cramer, 1779: 2 , 173, pl.194, fig. A [original plate 163, fig. A]. ‘Isle d’Amboine’ [= Indonesia, Ambon].
Papilio Eques Trojanus View in CoL amphimedon, Stoll, 1782b: 2 [No. 3].
Material examined. Syntype ♀, van Lennep label ‘ No. 3 AMPHIMEDON Cr. III. 194. A.’ and Felder label ‘ Coll Lenep Orig’ ( BMNH (E)#665102); quite a good match for original plate 163, fig. A, though the forewing is less contrasting and hindwing has an extra basal spot (may be an error in the painting). It has been re-pinned and the wings have minor repairs .
Current status. Junior subjective synonym of Troides (s.s.) o. oblongomaculatus (Goeze, 1779) ( Matsuka, 2001) [ Rothschild, 1895, gave reasons for giving priority to Goeze’s name].
