POLYDORUS LINNAEUS OF CRAMER, 1777 View in CoL
( FIG. 18 View Figures 15–20 )
Pap[ilio] Eq[ues] Troj[anus] polidorus, Cramer, 1777: 45, 150, pl.128, figs A, B [original plates 93, fig. E and 96, fig. E] [incorrect subsequent spelling]. ‘Cte de Coromandel’; Tranquebar; Bengalen [all misidentifications] and ‘Isle d’Amboine’ [= Indonesia, Amboina] (fig. 128. A is stated to be a male from Baron Rengers coll., fig. 128B a female from P.Luchtmans coll.).
Papilio Eques Achivus View in CoL polidorus, Stoll, 1782b: 3 [No. 15].
Material examined. 1 ♂, with van Lennep label ‘ No. 15. POLIDORUS. Cr. II. 128. A. B.’ ( BMNH (E)#665050) is correctly named but is not the same as the misidentified figures, which show hindwings with tails. Other markings, particularly the creamy discal spots on the hindwing differ considerably in arrangement. However, Cramer does mention a variety with little or no tail, and this specimen may relate to that; it has thoracic damage although the pin may be the original; there are some minor repairs to the wings, including suggestions that at one time tails were stuck to the hindwings and subsequently removed. It is intriguing that van Lennep was apparently able to correctly name this specimen, because this would hardly have been possible from reference to Cramer’s work (the only reference ever cited on van Lennep labels). It suggests that the specimen might have been associated with an earlier name label .
Identity of figure. Pachliopta aristolochiae (Fabricius, 1793) .
Identity of specimen. Pachliopta p. polydorus (Linnaeus, 1763) .
