PAULINA CRAMER, 1777

( FIG. 40 View Figures 39–42 )

Pap[ilio] Dan[aus] Cand[idus] paulina Cramer, 1777: 21 , 150, pl.110, figs E, F [original plate 77, figs D, D]. ‘Côte de Coromandel, à Tranquebar [coast of Coromandel, at Tranquebar] [error or misidentification], & dans l’isle de Java, près de Batavia’ [and on the island of Java, near to Batavia] (fig. from specimen in C.Stoll collection).

Papilio View in CoL Danaus View in CoL Candidus paulina, Stoll, 1782b: 5 [No. 62].

Material examined. Syntype ♀, BMNH (E)#229172 with van Lennep label ‘No.62, PAULINA Cr. II. 110. E. F.’ and ‘FELDER COLLN’ label is a good match for original plate 77, figs D, D; it appears to have been repinned. Moore (1905) thought that paulina was from Ceylon [= Sri Lanka] and not from Java, but this specimen is identical to material from Java .

Current status. Valid species in Appias ( Vane-Wright & de Jong, 2003) .

PHIALE CRAMER, 1775

( FIG. 41 View Figures 39–42 )

Pap[ilio] Dan[aus] Cand[idus] phiale Cramer, 1775: 43 , 154, pl.27, fig. F [original plate 36, fig. G]. Surinam.

Papilio View in CoL Danaus View in CoL Candidus phiale, Stoll, 1782b: 6 [No. 85].

Material examined. Syntype specimen, van Lennep label ‘ No. 85 PHIALE Cr. I. 27. F.’ ( BMNH (E)#665099) is a fair match for original plate 36, fig. G, although it has a much fainter yellow margin to the hindwing; there is thoracic damage and it may have been re-pinned .

Current status. Valid species in Eurema ( Lamas, 2004b) .
