NOTES: In proposing this variety Lister (1894: 98) cited the following material “… Lyme Regis, Dorset (L:B.M.75) …”, “… Ohio (L:B.M.75) …” and “… S. Carolina (BM 893).”. There are also two boxes in BM, one from Lyme Regis (BM 1334) with a small label stuck on the original label with “L:B.M.75” that we consider to be a duplicate of the lectotype as it has the same collection date. The second is from Preston, Ohio (BM 1336) and is material also cited in the original publication and also has a small label stuck on the original label with “L:B.M.75” that we consider to be a syntype. There is a slide mount from Lyme Regis with a small fragment of well conserved dry material and the number L:B.M.75 dated VII.1891, that is also a syntype, and another prepared slide with the same number dated 5.1889 that is another syntype. Both have the name “ melanospermum ” on a paper strip stuck over the original label, possibly farinaceum . In the second edition of the monograph (Lister 1911: 129) G.Lister synonymised D. farinaceum and D. melanospermum . There are no notebook notes as it was described before the date of the first notebook. In the same year as its publication, Morgan (1894) raised this variety to species, but in the second edition of the monograph Lister (1911) maintained it as a variety of D. melanospermum .
