NOTES: Lister (1911: 89) mentions original material from “Berks (BM 1720); Epping Forest (BM 2337); Germany (BM
2338); Philadelphia (BM 2340); Kansas (BM 2341)” and comments on page 87 “The var. ecorticata occurs both on dead leaves and on wood; it is not infrequent in this country, and has also obtained from Germany and from both the eastern and western United States ”. In BM there are 4 boxes (BM 2337, Epping Forest; BM 2338, Germany; BM 2340, Philadelphia;
BM 2341, Kansas), from which we select BM 2337 as the lectotype since it was collected by the author and is in good condition. No notes or slides were found. This var. ecorticata “without cortex” has been considered to be a synonym of F.
intermedia , although Lister (1925), in the third edition still considered it to be a variety of F. cinerea .
