( Figs. 9–12 View FIGURES 9 – 12 , 18 View FIGURES 16 – 19 )

Drapetis (Elaphropeza) mazaruni Smith, 1963: 154 View in CoL , fig. 2 (terminalia 3 – err. typ.: number of the illustration interchanged with Drapetis (Elaphropeza) similis View in CoL ); 1967: 39.4 (cat).

Elaphropeza mazaruni: Yang et al., 2007: 376 View in CoL (cat.).

Diagnosis. Yellow and slender species. Occiput lacking tomentum on ocellar triangle and on large shining region adjacent to upper part of eye. Postpronotal seta prominent; acrostichals biserial, dorsocentrals uniserial. Mid tibia lacking ventral spines in both sexes, hind femur with 1 subapical row of short posterior spinule-like bristles; hind tibia bearing 2 strong anterodorsal bristles. Vein R2+ 3 strongly arched, R4+ 5 bowed and remarkably divergent from M. Left surstylus long and slender.

Re-description. Holotype male (except wing). Body length 2.0 mm, wing length 2.0 mm. Occiput shiny black lacking white tomentum on upper part of frons, on ocellar triangle, on vertex and on large band on upper part of postcranium adjacent to eye, reddish setation, oral margin yellow. Frons broad with divergent sides, width of 1.3 ocellus just above antennae; face tomentose. Two pairs of convergent, somewhat proclinate vertical setae, inner pair longer, outer pair as long as postocular setae; ocellars proclinate, anterior pair convergent, moderately long, not cruciate, posterior pair minute, divergent. Occipitals lacking on vertex. Antenna yellow with reddish yellow setation, arista brown. Pedicel with circlet of subequally minute setae; postpedicel and basal aristomere 1.5 times longer than scape and pedicel combined; arista with long hairs. Palpus pale yellow, somewhat ovate, shorter than proboscis; proboscis yellow.

Thorax shining yellow, scutellum and subscutellum brown; scutum with few reddish setae; white tomentum across all of scutellum, subscutellum and postalar callus, scattered on anterior margin of scutum and on posterior half of pleura. Scutum rounded, as long as wide, 5.5 times longer than scutellum. Proepisternum bearing 1 seta on upper part, lacking seta just above fore coxa; postpronotal seta prominent; 2 notopleural setae (posterior one longer than anterior); 3 supra-alar setae (anterior one longest, posterior somewhat shorter than anterior); 1 short postalar seta; basal scutellar seta one-third of apical. Acrostichals biserial; dorsocentrals uniserial, distinct from intra-alars, prescutellar seta shorter than apical scutellar.

Legs yellow, all tarsomeres 5 brown; yellow setation, conspicuous bristles reddish yellow. Coxae and trochanters with unmodified setation. Fore femur somewhat thickened, bearing 1 long posteroventral bristle near base, 1 long anterior, 1 posterior and 1 posteroventral shorter subapical bristles. Fore tibia bearing 1 strong posteroventral subapical bristle; fore tarsomere 1 with ventral squamiform setae on apical half. Mid femur bearing 1 long posteroventral bristle near base, 2 ventral rows of bristles (longer near base) and 1 long anterior subapical bristle. Mid tibia with 1 posterior subapical bristle. Hind femur with anterior subapical bristle. Hind tibia with 2 strong anterodorsal bristles; apical projection short and broad.

Wing ( Fig. 18 View FIGURES 16 – 19 , specimen from Brazil, Alter do Chao) normally developed, uniformly covered with microtrichia, hyaline; veins yellow, reddish yellow setation; C bearing 1 long seta near base (not represented in Fig. 18 View FIGURES 16 – 19 ), setae on two proximal sections longer and more spaced than on other sections. Costal index: 28/ 15/30/19; Rs somewhat longer than cross-vein bm-cu, R2+3 strongly arched, reaching C slightly after the middle part of wing, R4+5 sinuous in apical half, remarkably divergent from M near margin, M almost straight; CuA1 reaching wing margin as a evanescent vein; A1 inconspicuous. Basal medial cell 2.2 times longer and 1.5 times wider than basal cubital; angle between cross-vein bm-cu and CuA1 somewhat acute; halter yellow.

Abdomen [ Smith (1963) described as “yellow except for blackish middle segment”. Probably he referred to tergite 4].

Terminalia ( Figs. 9–11 View FIGURES 9 – 12 ) brown, small. Cerci separated and slender, right cercus shorter. Right epandrial lamella ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9 – 12 ) long, apical lobe sub-triangular, with pointed apex and covered with small setae; right surstylus not evident; left epandrial lamella partially fused to hypandrium; left surstylus ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 9 – 12 ) long and slender bearing several small setae on distal half, basal lobe adjacent to left cercus bearing 4 distal setae. Two rod-shaped apodemes, ventral apodeme not reaching margin of hypandrium. Hypandrium bearing 1 strong median seta and rounded distal projection. Phallus very short and slender.

Female. Body length: 1.9–2.7 mm; wing length: 1.7–2.3 mm. Otherwise similar to male. Tergite 8 ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 9 – 12 , specimen from Brazil, Manaus) short, separated from sternite which presents lateral projection narrowed subapically with upper margin sinuous, not folded, basal part of sternite with concave surface; sternite 10 as in Fig. 12 View FIGURES 9 – 12 . Cercus yellow.

Variations. Male body length 1.4–2.3 mm, wing length 1.6–1.8 mm. One specimen from Para ( Brazil) has scutellum darker than holotype.

Type material examined. Holotype 3: [BRITISH] GUIANA, Coll. Richards & Smart, B.M. 1937-776 [white printed label] / Mazaruni , 2nd Growth, (Low Forest), 16.viii.1937 [white printed label] / Holotype 3, Elaphropeza mazaruni sp.n. K.G.V. Discussion. Male terminalia of E. mazaruni is very singular, especially its long and slender left surstylus, is readily identifiable. However, when we compared the holotype terminalia to the illustration presented in the original description by Smith (1963: 154, Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ), we observed that figures of E. mazaruni and E. similis are interchanged.
