Centris (Hemisiella) facialis Mocsáry, 1899 View in CoL

( Figures 5–8 View FIGURES 5 – 8 , 28 View FIGURE 28 )

Centris facialis Mocsáry, 1899: 253 View in CoL .

Centris nitida geminata Cockerell, 1914: 315 View in CoL , 316. (Synonymized by Rasmussen & Vivallo, 2014).

Diagnosis. Both sexes with hind leg dark brown to black with blackish pubescence. Mesosoma covered with intense yellow pubescence, without greenish reflection as in C. tarsata . Male metasoma dark brown to black; dorsal surface of T1 with whitish pilosity, with some brown hairs near the posterior edge. T2–T4 with dark brown pubescence. T5 and T6 mainly with brown pilosity, with some sparse white hairs. Centris facialis is not similar to any species of C. (Hemisiella) occurring in Colombia. By the coloration of the integument and pilosity, this species is similar to C. transversa . Males differ from it by the low-cariniform middline of the clypeus (absent in C. facialis ) and by the dark coloration of the lower paraocular area (yellow in C. facialis ). Females of both species differ in the coloration of T5 (whitish in C. transversa ; brown to black in C. facialis ) and the shape of the yellow spots on clypeus (lower margin of clypeal marks parallel to apical margin in C. transversa ; oblique to apical margin in C. facialis ).

Morphology. Female ( Figs. 5, 6 View FIGURES 5 – 8 ). Measurements: Approximate body length: 14.4; head width: 5.2; thorax width: 5.6; forewing length: 12.2; UID: 2.3; LID: 2.4; mandible length: 1.9; basal mandibular width: 0.9; labrum length: 0.7; labrum width: 1.3; F1 length: 1.0; F2 length: 0.2; F3 length: 0.3; scape length: 0.6; diameter of the median ocellus: 0.4; distance between the lateral ocellus and the eye: 0.5. Coloration: Head blackish, mesosoma and metasoma dark brown. Legs brown. Mandible (mainly), labrum, lower paraocular area and base of mid and fore tibiae yellow. Clypeus with two elliptical yellow spots starting in the center of the disc and ending near lateral margins. Anterior surface of flagellum (except F1) light brown. Tegula light brown with yellow posterior edge. Wing membranes yellowish to light brown with veins brown. Sculpture: Clypeus strongly areolate with coarse and dense punctation. Labrum areolate with coarse, very dense punctation. T2 with fine, very dense punctation, coarser and sparser on T3-T6. Pubescence: Head and mesosoma with intense yellow pubescence, darker on upper half of occiput, mesoscutum, mesoscutellum and lateral side of mesepisternum. Vertex with mixture of intense yellow pubescence and brown hairs. Gena, ventral surface of mesepisternum and dorsal surface of T1 with whitish pubescence. Tegula with intense yellow pubescence, with some short brown hairs on the posterior half. Legs with dark brown pubescence, except fore femur and tibia and posterior edge of middle tibiae. Terga with dark brown pubescence, lighter on fimbriae. Discs of S2 and S3 with tuft of yellowish pubescence. Structures: Mandible with three teeth (1st>3rd>2nd) with acute apex. Second tooth almost fused with rutellum. Trimal angle acute, welldeveloped. Acetabular carina reaching base of third tooth. Clypeal disc flat, slightly concave near lower edge (lateral view). Labrum semicircular. Inner orbits of compound eyes diverging above. Vertex slightly above upper ocular tangent. Secondary anterior comb of fore elaiospathe formed by three giant apically curved hairs. Pretarsal claws with small preapical tooth, absent in hind leg.

Male ( Figs. 7, 8 View FIGURES 5 – 8 ). Measurements: Approximate body length: 12.0; head width: 4.5; thorax width: 5.4; forewing length: 11.2; UID: 1.7; LID: 1.9; mandible length: 1.5; basal mandibular width: 0.8; labrum length: 0.6; labrum width: 1.2; F1 length: 1.0; F2 length: 0.2; F3 length: 0.3; scape length: 0.5; diameter of the median ocellus: 0.3; distance between the lateral ocellus and the eye: 0.3. Coloration: Head blackish, mesosoma and metasoma dark brown. Legs and tegula brown. Mandible (mainly), labrum, lower paraocular area and base of the mid and fore tibiae yellow. Clypeus yellow with dark brown spots on lower and upper edges. Anterior surface of the antennal flagellum (except F1) light brown. Wing membranes yellowish to light brown with veins brown. Sculpture: Clypeus strongly areolate with coarse and dense punctation. Labrum areolate with coarse and very dense punctation. T2 with fine and very dense punctation, coarser and sparser on T3–T7. Pubescence: Head and mesosoma with intense yellow pubescence, darker on upper half of occiput, mesoscutum and mesoscutellum. Vertex with brown hairs. Gena with whitish pubescence. Tegula with intense yellow pubescence, with brown hairs on posterior half. Fore leg with mainly light yellow pubescence. Middle and hind legs mainly with dark brown hairs. Dorsal surface of T1 with whitish pilosity, with some brown hairs near posterior edge. T2–T4 with dark brown pubescence. T5 and T6 mainly with brown pilosity, with some sparse white hairs. Structures: Mandible with three teeth (1st>3rd>2nd) with acute apex, except slightly truncate third tooth. Trimal angle relatively straight, poorly developed. Acetabular carina reaching base of third tooth. Clypeal disc flat, slightly concave near lower edge (lateral view). Labrum relatively elliptical. Inner orbits of compound eyes sub-parallel. Vertex slightly below upper ocular tangent. Hind femur well-developed. Hind basitarsus with spine-like projection on posterior surface.
