Type species. Curtos mongolicus Motschulsky View in CoL by original designation.
Diagnosis. The diagnosis from Fu et al. (2012a) is slightly modified here: Males distinguished from all other Luciolinae by the elytral punctation, which is wide, evenly sized and regularly spaced, and elytra with a pronounced longitudinal humeral carina; one of a group of Luciolinae in which the aedeagal LL are visible from beneath at the sides of the ML, Jeng et al. (1998) indicate the LL of the aedeagus are of unequal length but this feature is more widespread in the Luciolinae than first thought, and occurs in Triangulara Pimpasalee and many Sclerotia Ballantyne ( Ballantyne et al. 2016.); differing from many other Luciolinae in that the pronotal margins are often subparallel-sided and the pronotal width is subequal to the humeral width; Females macropterous with the same elytral characteristics as the male. Larva pale, terrestrial and soft bodied, with no plates heavily sclerotised nor darkened, and laterotergites visible at the sides of the body.
Discussion. The genus Curtos was established by Motschulsky (1845) for a single species Curtos mongolicus which he designated as the type. Jeng et al. (1998) revised the Taiwanese fauna from five species, added four new species and transferred a further three from Luciola . It appears that no subsequent revision of the genus actually included an examination of the type (Jeng pers. com.) and here we address Curtos sensu Chûjô & Sâtô (1970) and Jeng et al. (1998). It consists of 18 species. The following all bear the distinctive elytral features of Curtos and are recommended for transfer to Curtos : Luciola complanata Gorham 1895 , L. costata Pic 1929 , L. delauneyi Bourgeois 1890 , L. deplanata Pic 1929 , L. extricans ( Walker 1858) , L. multicostulata Pic 1927 , L. nigripes Gorham 1903 (actions not formalised here).
