Type species. Typhlodromus peregrinus Muma, 1955: 270 .

Main distinguishing characteristics. Whitish. Dorsal shield areolate, reticulate or mostly smooth. Idiosomal setal pattern 10A:9B/JV-3:ZV (10A:10B/JV-3:ZV in T. fragosoi (Yoshida-Shaul & Chant) , J1 present; 10A:8B/JV-3: ZV in T. athiasae (Pritchand & Baker) View in CoL , S5 absent); setae s4, Z4 and Z5 usually longer than other setae, but never whip-shaped; often with some setae distinctly stout and/ or blunt or capitate; ratio s4 / Z1 <3.0. Posterior margin of sternal shield often lightly sclerotised and inconspicuous. Ventrianal shields vase-shaped; Jv1 next to anterior shield margin. Peritreme reaching level of j1 (reaching only level between z2 and z 4 in T. nesiotus Ueckermann & Kreiter ). Spermathecal calyx tubular to saccular. Chelicera relatively robust, with inner margin of digits not deeply concave; fixed digit bearing 8–12 teeth about evenly distributed along the digit, and movable digit with 2–4 teeth. Macrosetae present on legs I–IV, varying from sharp-tipped to capitate. Ventrianal shield with three pairs of pre-anal setae arranged in a triangular pattern; spermadactyl penile.

Remarks. Nine of the 26 species presently included in this genus have been reported from Brazil, being T. aripo the most frequently reported. Worldwide, species of this genus have been reported from plants.
