Main distinguishing characteristics. Podonotal and opisthonotal shields separate (only in Macroseiini Chant et al. species) or fused; fused in all species reported from Brazil. As in all phytoseiids, j1, j3, j4, j6, J5, z2, z4, z5, Z4, Z5, s4, r3, Jv1, Jv2, Jv5 and Zv2 always present; R1 present, as in most other phytoseiids. The presence of other idiosomal setae is quite variable in the subfamily; in all species, z3 and s6 absent, whereas j5, J1, J2, J3, J4, z6, Z1–Z3, S2, S4, S5, r5, Jv4, Zv1, Zv3 present or absent; Jv3 only present in Macrocaudus Moraes et al. Most common idiosomal setal pattern: 10A:9B/JV-3:ZV, with the variable setae j5, J2, Z1, S2, S4, S5, Z1, Jv4 and Zv1 ( Chant & Yoshida-Shaul, 1989, 1991). Less common patterns in this subfamily (showing in parentheses the setae added or deleted in relation to the most common pattern) are: 11A:9B/JV-3:ZV (seta r5 present), 10A:12A/JV:ZV (J3, J4, Z3 and Jv3 present), 10A:11C/JV-3:ZV (J3 and J4 present), 10A:10B/JV-3:ZV (J1 present), 10A:10C/JV- 3:ZV (J3 present), 10A:9B/JV-3:ZV-3 (Zv3 absent), 10A: 9B: JV-3,4:ZV (Jv4 absent), 10A:9B/JV-3:ZV-1 (Zv1 absent), 10A:9B/JV-3:ZV-3 (Zv3 absent), 10A:8A/JV-3:ZV (Z1 absent), 10A:8A/JV-3,4:ZV (Z1 and Jv4 absent), 10A:8A/JV-3:ZV-3 (Z1 and Zv3 absent), 10A:8B/JV-3:ZV (S5 absent), 10A:8C/JV-3:ZV (S4 absent), 10A:8E/JV-3: ZV (J2 absent), 10A:7D/JV-3:ZV-3 (J2, S2 and Zv3 absent), 10A:7F/JV-3:ZV-3 (J2, Z1 and Zv3 absent, as defined by Barbosa et al., 2014), 10A:6E/JV-3:ZV (J2, S2 and S4 absent), 10A:6E/JV-3:ZV-3 (J2, S2, S4 and Zv3 absent), 10A:6E/JV-3,4:ZV-3 (J2, S2, S4, Jv4 and Zv3 absent), 10A:5D/JV-3:ZV (J2, S2, S4 and S5 absent), 9A:9B/JV-3: ZV-3 (j5 and Zv3 absent), 9A:8E/JV-3:ZV-3 (j5, J2 and Zv3 absent), 9A:7D/JV-3:ZV (j5, J2 and S2 absent), 9A:6E/ JV-3:ZV-3 (j5, J2, S2, S4 and Zv3 absent), 9A:6E/JV-3,4: ZV3 (j5, J2, S2, S4, Jv4 and Zv3 absent), 9A:5D/JV-3:ZV-3 (j5, J2, S2, S4, S5 and ZV3 absent). Shape and relative lengths of the dorsal idiosomal setae also variable, important to separate the taxonomic groups.
Likewise, shape of ventral shields, number of pre-anal setae (opisthogastric setae on ventrianal shield in addition to the circumanal setae), length of peritreme, shape of spermatheca, characteristics of chelicera and of leg macrosetae variable, as mentioned subsequently under each genus. Unless otherwise specified, j5 should be considered as present, r5 as absent, peritreme should be considered long (extending to level of j1), number of pre-anal setae should be considered three pairs and not inserted on a transverse line, and cheliceral digits should be considered of similar sizes.
Remarks. In their comprehensive review of the Amblyseiinae, Chant & McMurtry (2003 a, 2003b , 2004 a, 2004b, 2005 a, 2005b, 2005c, 2006 a, 2006b, 2007) divided the subfamily into the following tribes Afroseiulini Chant & McMurtry, Amblyseiini Wainstein , Euseiini Chant & McMurtry , Indoseiulini Ehara & Amano, Kampimodromini Kolodochka , Macroseiini Chant et al., Neoseiulini Chant & McMurtry , Phytoseiulini Chant & McMurtry and Typhlodromipsini Chant & McMurtry. Out of these, only Afroseiulini ( Afroseiulus Chant & McMurtry , without setae j5, J2, Z1, S4, S5, Jv3, Jv4, Zv1 and Zv3), Indoseiulini ( Gynaeseius Wainstein , anterior end of peritrematic plate not fused with dorsal shield) and Macroseiini ( Macroseius Chant et al. , podonotal and opisthonotal shields separate) have not been reported from Brazil.
