Remarks. This is one of the oldest names in Otostigmus . It was described by Humbert and Saussure (1870) in the genus Branchiostoma Newport, 1845 and transferred to Branchiotrema Kohlrausch, 1878 by Kohlrausch (1881). Pocock (1896) described a new genus Parotostigmus to include a new species, Parotostigmus denticulatus , from Mexico and eight species of Otostigmus from South America, O. scabricauda included. Since Pocock (1896) had not proposed a type species for Parotostigmus, Attems (1928) designated O. scabricauda as the type species of the subgenus. Otostigmus scabricauda is widely distributed in the coastal areas of Brazil ( Figure 38 View FIGURE 38 ), however it has also been recorded for inland regions of the country and from Colombia, Peru and Ecuador ( Bücherl, 1974) and Guatemala ( Attems, 1930).
