Centris (Centris) flavifrons ( Fabricius, 1775) View in CoL
Apis flavifrons Fabricius, 1775 View in CoL . 383.
Type data: Fabricius (1775) did not indicate the number of males he used to describe this species. In 1960a, Moure indicated he studied the holotype of this species assuming that it was described based on a single specimen housed at NHMUK. Due to the lack of evidence on the number of specimens used by Fabricius (1775), according to the ICZN Article 74.6 the Moure’s assumption can be treated as a valid lectotype designation.
Type locality: Brazil, probably near Rio de Janeiro ( Moure, 1960a) .
Centris scapulata Lepeletier, 1841 View in CoL . 159.
Type data: Lepeletier (1841) described this species based on an unknown number of females collected in French Guiana. According to the original description the type specimen(s) is(are) housed at MNHP. Unfortunately, there were not found exemplars under this name in that collection or in OUMNH, despite active searching .
Type locality: French Guiana: Cayenne .
Comments: Taxonomic decision for synonymy: Friese (1901) proposed the possible synonymy between C. scapulata and C. flavifrons which was formalized by Moure (1945). This species was correctly interpreted by Snelling (1984), Moure et al. (2007) and Vivallo & Zanella (2012). Centris flavifrons is widely distributed in the New Word, occurring from the Mexican state of Sinaloa (Nearctic Region) to Misiones province in northeastern Argentina (Neotropical Region) ( Moure et al., 2007).
