( Figs. 34–36 View FIGURE 34 View FIGURE 35 View FIGURE 36 )
Diagnosis. Female: Gnathosoma : Palpal length about 1/4 length of gnathosoma. Dorsum: Reticulate ornamentation present on prodorsum, and tergites C, D and EF. Tergite C with four rows of somewhat longitudinally fused cells, grouped between setae c1 and c2, and same number of cells per row (six). Tergite D ornamented with longitudinal depressions anteriad setae d. Setae v1, sc2 and h unmodified in shape. Setae v1 shorter than sc2 (~ 23 and ~ 36, respectively), both longer than h (~ 13). Setae c1, c2, d, e and f leaf-shaped, all lanceolate. Setae c1, c2 and d similar in length (~ 24) and width (~ 8). Setae c1 inserted near posterior border of tergite C. Posterior setae e and f identical in length (~ 14) and width (~ 7). Setae f ~10 distant from each other, on rounded tubercles. Venter: Tegula rounded, weakly arched posteriorly. Apodemes distinct, except for prosternal apodeme from level of apodemes 2 to sejugal apodeme. Apodemes 2 not fused to prosternal apodeme. Poststernal apodeme bifurcated anteriorly. Legs: sensory cluster of tibiotarsus I complete. Seta tc” of tarsus II slender and serrate. Male & larva: unknown.
Description (two specimens measured):
Gnathosoma : ovoid in ventral view, length 37 (36–38), maximum width 26 (26–27). Setae dgs 12 and vgs 7 smooth; palps length 12, with two small subterminal setae and terminal projections. Pharynx length 12 (12–13), maximum width 7.
Idiosoma—dorsum: length 194 (192–198), width at level of c1 98 (96–102). Prodorsal shield with reticulate ornamentation, covers gnathosoma. Setae sc1 inserted anteriorly to sc2. Tergites C, D and EF also with reticulate ornamentation. Lengths of setae: v1 23 (22–25), sc1 15, sc2 36 (34–38), c1 25 (24–26), c2 22 (20–24), d 23, e 14 (14–15), f 15 (13–17) and h 13 (13–14). Maximum widths of posterior setae: d 8, e 7 and f 5. All dorsal setae serrate. Setae v1, sc2 and h unmodified; c1, c2, d, e and f lanceolate. All inserted on tubercles, except for h. Distances between dorsal setae: v1–v1 31 (30–33), sc2–sc2 49 (48–50), v1–sc2 22 (22–23), c1–c1 52 (52–53), c2–c2 63 (62–64), c1–c2 30, d–d 28 (27–29), f–f 10 (9–11), e–f 17 and h–h 23 (23–24).
Idiosoma—venter: setae 1a 5 (5–6); 2a 8 (8–9); 3a 14 near anteromedial margins of apodemes 3; 3b 9 behind posterior ends of apodemes 4. Apodemes 1 conspicuous, fused to anterior end of prosternal apodeme. Apodemes 2 short, not fused to prosternal apodeme. Prosternal apodeme conspicuous from junction with apodeme 1 to level of apodemes 2. Sejugal apodeme continuous. Apodeme 3 extending diagonally from proximity of base of seta 3a to (but not laterally beyond) anterior margin of trochanter III. Apodeme 4 extending diagonally from midlength of poststernal apodeme to base of seta 3b. Poststernal apodeme bifurcated anteriorly. Tegula 12 wide and 7 long; posterior margin arched. Setae ps 7 smooth.
Legs: Lengths: leg I 53 (51–55), leg II 49 (49–50), leg III 82 (81–84). Number of setae: leg I: 3-4-5(2)+7(1), leg II: 3-3-4-4(1), leg III: 1+2-4-4. Tarsal solenidion ω of tibiotarsus I 5. Sensory cluster of tibiotarsus I complete, solenidion φ1 3, slender, capitate; solenidion φ2 4, robust, slightly capitate; famulus k 6; all inserted at approximately same level. Seta d of tibiotarsus I 27 (25–29), serrate. Solenidion ω of tarsus II length 4. Seta d of tibia II 17 (16–18), serrate. Femorogenu IV 11; tibiotarsus IV 14 (14–15). Length of leg IV setae: v’ F 5 (5–6), v’ G 8, v’ Ti 19 and tc” 22; all setae smooth, except for v’ G and v’ Ti; v’ Ti tapered.
Type material deposition: Holotype ♀ and one paratype ♀ deposited at USNM.
Locality: All specimens on Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. ( Malvaceae ), Coral Gables, State of Florida, USA, D. De Leon.
Etymology: The species name donaldi is in honor of late Dr. Donald De Leon (1902-1966), Bureau of Entomology-USDA for his contribution to the study of mites, particularly on Daidalotarsonemus .
