Note: There have been difficulties in the application of this name and Heywood (in Agron. Lusit. 22: 13. 1960) discussed the various elements and concluded that the name should be rejected as a nomen ambiguum, taking up Orlaya kochii Heyw. instead. However, no formal proposal has ever been made. Fernandes (in Bol. Soc. Broc., sér. 2, 41: 398. 1967) typified the name on a Linnaean collection in S, identifiable as O. grandiflora (L.) Hoffm. , into the synonymy of which C. daucoides would consequently fall. Greuter (in Boissiera 13: 93. 1967) designated a neotype for the name, which would have made O. daucoides (L.) Greuter the correct name for what has been called O. platycarpos auett. However, this neotypification is invalid as original material for the name is in existence (Art. 9.11). Nevertheless, what is clear is that C. daucoides , the generitype of Caucalis , is identified with the genus Orlaya Hoffm. (1814) which it pre-dates. Both generic names are in use and priority would dictate that Caucalis should therefore replace Orlaya , with Nigera Bubani (1899) apparently the next available name for Caucalis . Proposing C. platycarpos as the conserved type of Caucalis could stabilise the application of the two generic names involved.
