Diagramma picta (Thunberg, 1792) —Painted sweetlips STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 13, CTR 20, CTR 24.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East and South Africa east to Philippines and Fiji, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to southern Indonesia and New Caledonia. Found on open muddy or silty substrates in protected bays or estuaries, or in shallow coastal areas and coral or rocky reefs, juveniles among seagrass, 1– 50 m. Transitional water and marine.

Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides Lacepède, 1801 —Harlequin sweetlips

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 7, CTR 16B, CTR 20.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Mauritius and Maldives east to western Caroline Islands and Tonga, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Solitary, in coastal coral reefs, lagoons, and on seaward reef slopes, during the day often under ledges, 1– 30 m. Transitional water and marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens photographed at St. CTR 13. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Solitary or in small groups, in sheltered coastal reefs or lagoons, 2– 40 m. Marine.

Plectorhinchus gibbosus (Lacepède, 1802) —Humpback sweetlips

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Plectorhynchus gibbosus by Parenti & Allen (1991: 319). Specimens photographed at St. CTR 20. CAS and WAM material.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East and South Africa, Madagascar and weastern Mascarenes east to Caroline and Society islands, north to Taiwan, south to Exmouth Gulf (Western Australia) and Norfolk Island. Adults solitary, in coastal, lagoon and seaward reefs; juveniles in estuaries, mangrove habitats, and freshwater streams, 0– 25 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 3, CTR 0 4, CTR 18, CTR 20, CTR 22, CTR 24.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Java ( Indonesia) east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Solitary or in small groups, in coastal, lagoon and seaward coral reefs, resting in the open during the day, active at night, 1– 35 m. Marine.

Plectorhinchus picus ( Cuvier in Guérin-Méneville, 1828) —Spotted sweetlips

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 13, CTR 16, CTR 20.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Seychelles and Mascarenes east to Society Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island and Rapa. Found in lagoon and seaward coral reefs, adults usually resting during the day under coral heads or in caves, active at night, juveniles in shallow lagoons, 1– 50 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 3, CTR 14.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa and Mascarenes east to Guam and Society Islands, south to New Caledonia. Found above coral reefs or inshore rocky reefs, juveniles in the lagoon, 2– 25 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Kailola (1987b: 311).

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea and East Africa east to Philippines and New Guinea, north to Taiwan, south to Queensland ( Australia). Found on sand or mud bottoms, entering estuaries, 1– 75 m. Transitional water and marine.
