New record from Madang, based on specimens observed at St. CTR 0 1, CTR 14, CTR 16, CTR 19, CTR 20, CTR 26, CTR 28, CTR 31, CTR 32, PR 79. AMS and CAS material (AMS I.16746-010, I.19713-028; CAS 63662, 65615).
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East Africa and western Mascarenes east to Marshall, Tuamotu and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia, New Caledonia and Tonga. Found in schools along seaward coral reefs, 0– 50 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Carpenter (1987: 17); previously reported as Caesio erythrogaster by Kailola (1975: 128). WAM material. Specimens observed at St. CTR 0 1, CTR 0 3, CTR 13, CTR 16, CTR 16B, CTR 20, CTR 21, CTR 22, CTR 24, CTR 25, CTR 28, CTR 30, CTR 31, CTR 32, and photographed by P. Laboute and Tan H. H. at St. PR 0 8 on (8 Nov. 2012), PR 25 (13 Nov. 2012) and PR 43 (16 Nov. 2012); a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen at Madang Market. AMS, NTUM, USNM and WAM material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Sri Lanka east to Philippines and Vanuatu, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Living in schools off coastal reefs, often in areas with limited visibility, 0– 60 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Carpenter (1987: 18). BMNH material. Specimens observed and photographed at St. CTR 0 4, CTR 0 8, CTR 16; a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen at Madang Market. NTUM material.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Marshall Islands and Fiji, north to southern Japan, south to off northwestern Australia and New Caledonia. Forming large aggregations at the outer edge of seaward reefs or around patch reefs, 0– 50 m. Marine.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa and western Mascarenes east to Kiribati (Line Islands), Samoa and Tonga, north to Ogasawara Islands, south to off northwestern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in schools in lagoons and deep channels of coral and rocky reefs, 2– 50 m. Marine.

STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS material (AMS I.19694-015, I.19694-016).
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Somalia and Gulf of Aden east to Philippines and Solomon Islands, north to Taiwan, south to northern Australia. In dense aggregations in coastal, lagoon and seaward reefs, 1– 20 m. Marine.
Gymnocaesio gymnoptera (Bleeker, 1856) —Slender fusilier
STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Carpenter (1987: 52); a specimen collected by W.-J. Chen in Madang Bay. AMS, NTUM and USNM material.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to New Guinea and Fiji, north to Philippines, south to Loyalty Islands. Found in schools along seaward coral reefs, 0– 150 m. Marine.
