Thryssa baelama (Forsskål in Niebuhr, 1775) — Baelama anchovy, little priest
STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Whitehead et al. (1988: 425–426). CAS material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East Africa and Mascarenes east to Caroline and Mariana islands, Samoa and Tonga, north to Ogasawara Islands, south to Western Australia, Queensland ( Australia) at 16°30'S, and New Caledonia. Pelagic in coastal waters near reefs, and in estuaries, 0– 50 m. Transitional water and marine.
Thryssa encrasicholoides (Bleeker, 1852) —False baelama anchovy
STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS material (AMS I.16747-004). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. India and Sri Lanka; Indonesia east to Philippines and New Guinea, south to northern Australia. Pelagic in coral reef lagoons, entering estuaries, 0– 50 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine.
Thryssa setirostris (Broussonet, 1782) —Longjaw thryssa
STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang by Whitehead et al. (1988: 443). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South and East Africa east to Philippines and Solomon Island, north to Taiwan, south to northern Australia and Vanuatu. Pelagic in coral reef lagoons, entering estuaries, 0– 20 m. Transitional water and marine.
