Chelipoda recurva Collin, 1928: 34 View in CoL . Syn. n.

Type material. Collin (1928) described Chelipoda recurva from two females from Ohakune, iii and v–vii. 1923, T. R. Harris [ BMNH]. Ohakune is in: New Zealand, North Island, RI. The female labelled iii.1923 is here designated lectotype and the one labelled v–vii.1923 is here designated paralectotype. Chelipoda mirabilis was described by Collin (1928) from a single male collected at Ohakune ‘between 15.xii.1922 and 15.i.1923 ’, T. R. Harris [ BMNH]. Collin (1928: 34) discussing C. recurva stated ‘It is possible that this supposed species may prove to be the female of Ch. mirabilis …’. The present study supports Collin’s speculation and concludes that a single sexually dimorphic species is involved on the basis of shared morphological characters and colour pattern and the occurrence of both sexes together. Chelipoda recurva Collin, 1928 is here recognized as a junior synonym of Chelipoda mirabilis Collin, 1928 .

Additional material: 1♂, HB, Puketitiri, Little Bush , 10/xii/1989, THD & JMD ; 2♂, 3♀, AK? Nihotupu, Auckland, 2/i/1950, RAH (all in NZAC) ; 1♀, ND? Te Matua Ngahere, Waipoua Forest , 4/ii/1975, RAH [ LUNZ] ; 39 ♂, 48♀, various sites [TO, WO, BP], dates between early November and late March , ARP [ NMWC] .

Description. Male: length: 4.0–5.0mm (wet material); 3.5–4.0mm (dry material).

Head: black, face and extreme front of frons paler; upo black, shorter than ocl but similar length to vt; lpo whitish, uniserial becoming 2–3 serial below. Antenna with postpedicel reddish brown, 3–4X as long as broad, pointed lanceolate, about 0.4–0.5X as long as bare apical arista; basal segments dark yellow, rather barrel shaped, scape with distinct dorsal seta. Mouthparts yellow, palpi with fine pale hairs.

Thorax: ground colour of mesonotum yellowish, a narrow lateral dark stripe from above pprnlb to root of wing and often a paler broad median stripe widening posteriorly to include sct and metanotum; pprnlb and extreme margin of mesonotum yellowish. Pleura yellowish with three conspicuous brown stripes; upper stripe extending from pcol, over prothoracic spiracle and narrowly along top of anepisternum to root of wing; middle stripe from prothoracic spiracle to kat (leaving anatergite yellow) to base of haltere; lower stripe over lower part of katepisternum and mr. Entire thorax rather evenly grey dusted appearing paler and more silvery over yellow areas of pleura and hardly obscuring ground colour. Thoracic setae black; dc2 strong (as strong as unp, pprn, sa and sct), dc1 slightly weaker; dc3 and dc5 small and fine; dc4 absent or minute; lnp and pa well developed, ph small; pst with a few minute pale hairs at sides; laterotergite with 3–5 strong setae.

Legs: yellow with ‘knees’ and apical tarsal segments dusky. C 1 ( Fig. 142 View FIGURES 140–146 ) about 1.1X as long as thorax, somewhat inflated distally, a row of 13–16 black downcurved spines anteriorly mostly longer than C 1 is deep, a dense patch of yellow bristles on outside distally. Front trochanter with projecting tubercle basally bearing long yellowish bristles; a fan of similar yellowish bristles anterodistally ending in a single distinctive black curving anteroapical bristle. F 1 about 1.3X as long as C 1, rather slender, 6X as long as wide, slightly inflated; the double rows of spines and denticles commencing 0.4 from base. Femoral formula 3(3–4)/17(14–18)/7(5– 9)/11(10–13), a small ventral bristle 0.15 from base. F 2 slender but slightly swollen on basal 0.5, gradually concave anterodorsally at 0.7 from base; a short row of erect bristles dorsally at 0.5 and 4 longer bristles just basal and slightly ad to them; 4–5 longish bristles in front near tip. F 3 simple, slender, not strongly ciliated dorsally. T 1 0.5X as long as F 1, linear, a row of about 33 minute adpressed denticles forming a narrow rim along ventral surface with a line of erect hairs in front and slightly longer reclining hairs behind; a few perpendicular cilia above and below.

T 2 very slender, slightly outwardly curved, 3 long bristly hairs dorsally at 0.7, a few long apical hairs. T 3 with only short hairs; at1 about as long as next three tarsal segments, at2 0.7X as long as at3; mt1 longer than following segments combined, ciliated with long hairs anteriorly and posteriorly.

Wing: ( Fig. 138 View FIGURES 131–139 ) with vein R 2+3 short, curved strongly towards C opposite end of cell dm and enclosing a strongly marked black spot; cell dm very narrow, 7.5X as long as wide, a black circular spot anterior of end of cell. A 1 virtually absent represented by little more than a fold in membrane.

Abdomen: brown above, yellowish below, hairs on margins and disc of tergites strongest on segment 1 and 2, absent on tergites 7 and 8. Genitalia ( Figs. 35–37 View FIGURES 34–39 ) rather small, epandrial lobes narrowly oblong, more strongly sclerotized and bearing longer hairs distally. Hypandrium not fused with epandrium, more strongly sclerotized laterally with 3 pairs of strong bristles and shorter hairs on posterolateral margins. Cerci rather banana-shaped with short bristles apically and on inner margins. Postgonite with a short truncate lower lobe and a longer upper lobe, both bearing short setae apically.

Description. Female: similar to male differing as follows.

Head: basal antennal segments paler (often yellowish) and postpedicel shorter (2.5X as long as wide), 0.3–0.5X as long as arista.

Thorax: mesonotum usually with broad median stripe distinct.

Legs: with C 1 simple, not inflated distally, only minute hairs in front and behind. Front trochanters simple. F 1 slightly broader than in male, rather inflated below, widest 0.5 from base, 4.0–4.5X as long as wide. Femoral formula 3(3–3)/18(15–20)/9(6–11)/9(7–11). T 1 0.6X length of C 1; second tarsal segment of front leg 0.4– 0.5X as long as third. F 2 linear, not swollen basally, short-haired, no pv bristle towards tip; mt1 very long but without ciliation of long hairs.

Wing: vein R 2+3 curving evenly towards R 4+5 opposite cell dm and then curving strongly forwards to join C at a right angle slightly beyond end of dm. Membrane lacking black spots. Cell dm broader, 4.5–5.0X as long as wide.

Abdomen: with terminal papillae rather broad with pale hairs.

Comments. This is a sexually dimorphic species in the C. consignata -group with conspicuously striped thorax and R 2+3 short and strongly curved in both sexes and males with two black spots on the wings. C. mirabilis is confined to the north Island with most records spanning a central belt across the Volcanic Plateau to the Bay of Plenty. All specimens were captured between early November and late March

except for the paralectotype female which is labelled v–vii.1923.
