TYPE LOCALITY: Peru, Junin Dept., Vitoc, Garita del Sol .

DISTRIBUTION: Eastern slopes of the Andes of Peru.

COMMENT: Subgenus Hadrosciurus ; see Cabrera, 1961:378. Allen, 1915, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 34:215, placed pyrrhinus in the genus Mesosciurus , some members of which (not including pyrrhinus ) Moore, 1959, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 118:204, placed as a subgenus in the genus Syntheosciurus .
