Astylium claviger Rondani, 1850

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1850c: 185 (as “ Dasipogon claviger ”), 195 (as “ Astylium claviger ”).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Venezuela ” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MRSN: Box 1755): Dasipogon Mg claviger Rndn. , Venezuela / holotype Senobasis clavigera (Rond.) , N. Papavero det. [19]72 / Dasipogon claviger Rond. 1850: 185 , Venezuela; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUN: Box Asilidei A05,05): Astylium claviger Rnd. , Venezuela / M. Zool. N° 10999.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Senobasis clavigera [sic!] ( Martin & Papavero 1970: 57, Papavero 2009: 79).

REMARKS: Rondani (1850c: 185) described Astylium claviger from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths, from material received from E. Truqui. For this nominal species Rondani (1850: 185) proposed the new genus Astylium , instead of Dasipogon ; he used the combination Astylium claviger in the description of the species (p. 185) and in the index of figures (p. 195) and Dasipogon claviger in the index of the species (p. 196). Costa (1866: 35) listed (as Astilium [sic!] claviger ) a single MZUN specimen numbered “773” . Nelson Papavero examined the MRSN material in 1972 and labeled the single female as “ holotype ” but, as far as we know, he never indicated this specimen as holotype in any of his publication. We found two syntypes in our study .
