ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 89.
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Cap. B. Spei [Cape of Good Hope ( South Africa)]”.
TYPE MATERIAL: not found in this study.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Bibio brachiatus ( Hardy 1980: 215) View in CoL .
REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 89) described Bibio brachiata from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material received from M. Spinola. Costa (1866: 39) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “935”, which we did not locate in this study.
