ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 29.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Chile [ Chile]” ( Macquart 1844: 132) [type locality for Calliphora rufipalpis Macquart, 1844 ].

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Calliphora rufipalpis Macquart, 1851 ( James 1970: 16) ; junior synonym of Xenocalliphora hortona (Walker, 1849) ( Kurahashi 2007: 708) . See Remarks.

REMARKS: Macquart (1834b: 26; 1844: 289; 1851a: 216) described three different species under the same name Calliphora rufipalpis . Consequently Rondani (1863: 29) proposed the new replacement name Somomya americana for Calliphora rufipalpis Macquart without specifying the year of description. Dear (1986: 53) treated Calliphora rufipalpis as a synonym of the New Zealand species Xenocalliphora hortona (Walker, 1849) , considering as incorrect the collecting locality of Calliphora rufipalpis . Dear (1986: 53) considered Somomya americana Rondani 1863 as a new replacement name for Calliphora rufipalpis Macquart, 1851 . The type material for Somomya americana will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Calliphora rufipalpis Macquart, 1851 . For this latter species Dear (1986: 54) designated a lectotype and paralectotype in the MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020).
