ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 195 (key), 199 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus agri parmensis [ Parmese hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, 10 ♀♀, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 24): Caenosia Mgn / villipes Rnd. , Parma / 1283 ; 1 ♀, syntype (missing head and both mid-legs) ( MSNC: Box DIPTERA Ex collezione Rondani - I): Caenosia villipes Rnd . 532 ♀ Apenn. [= Apennines] / Coll. Rondani, scatola n° 6, posiz. G-10 / Museo di Storia Naturale Università di Pisa, Calci ( PI) ex collezione Rondani .

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Coenosia villipes View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 214, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 199) described both sexes of Caenosia villipes without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens under the generic name “ Caenosia ”, which is an incorrect subsequent spelling of Coenosia Meigen, 1826 ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 43). We found 13 syntypes in this study.
