Dasiops loncheus Rondani, 1856 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1856: 120.
TYPE LOCALITY: Meigen (1826: 308) gave no type locality in the original description of Lonchea dasyops , but presumably it is Europe because the work deals with European species
TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Dasiops latifrons ( Meigen, 1826) ( Kovalev & Morge 1984: 249) View in CoL .
REMARKS: Rondani’s (1856: 120) key for the new genus Dasiops Rondani, 1856 identifies Lonchea dasyops Meigen, 1826 as the type species. Having used the species’ epithet for his new genus and thinking that the name Dasiops dasiops was incorrect, he erroneously substituted it with Dasiops loncheus , but did not provide a detailed description ( Rondani 1856: 120). In his redescriptions of Dasiops loncheus, Rondani (1875a: 272, 1878b: 165 ) placed it in synonymy with Lonchaea parvicornis Meigen, 1826 , Chorthophila lasiophtalma Macquart, 1835 and Lasiops aenescens Meigen, 1838 . Dasiops loncheus is considered as a synonym of Dasiops lasiophthalmus ( Macquart, 1835) by Bezzi (1892: 48), Becker (1895: 322), Pandellé (1902: 421) and Bezzi & Stein (1907: 88), and as a synonym of Dasiops latifrons ( Meigen, 1826) by Czerny (1934: 7), Collin (1953: 181), Morge (1959a: 39) and Kovalev & Morge (1984: 249), but never as a valid species. The type material for Dasiops loncheus will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Lonchea dasyops Meigen, 1826 . Morge (1959a: 923) reported the holotype of Lonchaea dasiops in the MNHN. Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle (2020) did not list this latter species. Morge (1959a: 44) incorrectly considered the female of Dasiops loncheus in the MZUB as the lectotype. Under the name Dasiops loncheus there are four males and five females in the MZUF and two specimens in the MZUB (all are non-types). The type species of Dasiops is Lonchaea latifrons Meigen, 1826 . The species name dasiops published as Lonchea [sic!] dasiops Rondani, 1856 (an incorrect spelling for dasyops , Lonchaea, Meigen, 1826 ) is considered as a rejected name ( China 1961; I.C.Z.N. 1963: 114 [Opinion 652]).
