Caenosia genualis Rondani, 1866 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 195 (key), 200 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in agro parmensi. … In Etruria … in Insubria [Parmese territory … Etruria (= Tuscany) … Insubria (= Lombardy) ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, syntypes (one glued to a cardboard stage, the other dirty, partially damaged by the pin), 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUF: Box 24): Caenosia Mgn / genualis Rnd. , Parma / 1286; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUF: Box 24): Caenosia Mgn / genualis Rnd. , Parma / 1286 / [label not interpreted].

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Coenosia genualis View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 205, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 200) described both sexes of Caenosia genualis without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material he had collected and also received from F.M. Piccioli and L. Erra. We found four syntypes in this study. An additional MZUF specimen numbered “1286” is not included in the type series because its label is yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original ones and is in a lower row in the Box, for which reason we treat it to be a subsequent addition. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Caenosia ”, which is an incorrect subsequent spelling of Coenosia Meigen, 1826 ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 43).
