ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 194 (key), 198 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus agri parmensi [ Parmese hills ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 4 ♂♂, syntypes (one missing head, left fore-, both mid- and hind-legs; one missing abdomen, left wing, left fore-, both mid-, and hind-legs; one very dirty), 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUF: Box 24): Caenosia Mgn / nigridigita Rnd. , Parma / 1281; 1 ♂, 1 ♀, syntypes ( OUMNH General Collection: Box 158.2): syntype / Typ. Rd nigridig. / sec. typ. Rondanii / C. nigridigita Ex. Coll. Kow.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Coenosia nigridigita View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 208, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 16).

REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 198) described both sexes of Caenosia nigridigita without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens. We found seven syntypes in this study. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Caenosia ”, which is an incorrect subsequent spelling of Coenosia Meigen, 1826 ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 43).
