ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 195 (key), 200 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in agro Bononiensi [ Bolognese territory ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype (hypopygium and fifth abdominal sternite on a slide) ( MZUF: Box 24): Caenosia Mgn / ungulata Rnd., Bonon. [= Bologna] / 1288 / holotype ♂ Caenosia ungulata Rond., 1866 / genitalia on a slide.
SLIDE: Hypopygium and fifth sternite on slide n° 11 (Box Diptera Rondani 2): Coenosia ungulata Rond., 1866 , ♂.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Caricea ungulata ( Pont 1986b: 195) View in CoL ; valid species, as Lispocephala ungulata ( Gorodkov et al. 1995: 15) .
REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 200) described Caenosia ungulata from a single male: “ Marem unicum collection meae … lectum fuit a nob. Tacchetti [A single male in my collection collected by noble Tacchetti]”. The MZUF also contains a female (non-type). Rondani (1871a) described the female sex. Ackland & Pont (1966: 1) stated: “Rondani’s material of ungulata … consists of two conspecific males, N° 1228 [sic!] of the Rondani collection. Rondani described his species from a single male, but the males we studied were both without any label that might indicate their status. We have dissected and labeled as holotype the male that we consider to fit Rondani’s description more closely”. The additional male in the MZUF (Box 24) is incorrectly labeled: “1288 / Caenosia Mgn / ungulata Rnd., Bonon. [= Bologna] / lectotype ♂ Coenosia ungulata Rondani, 1866 , designated by A.C. Pont and D.M. Ackland, 1965”. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Caenosia ”, which is an incorrect subsequent spelling of Coenosia Meigen, 1826 ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 43).
