Caenosia elegantula Rondani, 1866 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1866a: 194 (key), 198 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Italia etiam meridionali [ Italy including the South ]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♂♂, 1 ♀, syntypes ( MZUF: Box 24): Caenosia Mgn / elegantula Rnd. , Parma / 1279 .
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Coenosia testacea ( Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830) View in CoL ( Pont 1986b: 212, Gorodkov et al. 1995: 16).
REMARKS: Rondani (1866a: 198) described both sexes of Caenosia elegantula , without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material he had collected and also received from A. Costa. We found three syntypes in this study. An additional four males and one female in the MZUF numbered “1279” are not included in the type series because their labels are yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and are in a lower row in the Box, for which reason we treat them to be subsequent additions. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name “ Caenosia ”, which is an incorrect subsequent spelling of Coenosia Meigen, 1826 ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 43).
