ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1857: 151 (key), 158 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ in Pedemontio [Piedmont ( Italy)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, holotype (missing left mid-leg) ( MZUF: Box 6): Cheilosia Mgn / pedemontana Bellar., Pedem. [= Piedmont] / 281 / Holotypus Cheilosia pedemontana Rond. , det. Claussen 1988.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Peck 1988: 113, Belcari et al. 1995a: 13, Claussen & Thompson 1996: 280).

REMARKS: Rondani (1857: 158) described Cheilosia pedemontana from just the female sex without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length: “ Foeminam tantum speciei mihi Prof. Bellardi transmisit [Prof. Bellardi sent to me only the female of the species]”. He attributed the species name to L. Bellardi. Claussen & Thompson (1996: 280) considered the single MZUF female as the holotype.
