ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1873f: 300.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Persia Sept. [ Northern Persia]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, holotype ( MSNG): Persia settent. [northern Persia], 1862–63, Coll. G. Doria / typus / aspahanicus Rond. / Tabanus aspahanicus Rondani , 29.3.09 / Tabanus aspahanicus Rondani, 1873 , n. sp.

CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Tabanus spectabilis Loew, 1858 (Chvála 1988: 155) .

REMARKS: Rondani (1873f: 300) described Tabanus aspahanicus from just the male sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length, from material collected by G. Doria . Guiglia (1957: 196) and Raineri & Rey (1996: 54) reported the holotype (♂) in the MSNG.
