Chrysina modesta (Sturm, 1843)

Plusiotis aenigmatica Morón, 1990 . New synonym.

Chrysina aenigmatica ( Morón, 1990) ; Hawks (2001).

Chrysina modesta was described by Sturm from “ Mexico ”, and was cited by Morón (1990) from Estado de Mexico (Temascaltepec, Sierra de Nanchichitla) and Michoacán (Presa del Bosque). Plusiotis aenigmatica was described by Morón (1990) from Estado de Mexico (Valle de Bravo, Villa Guerrero), and Morelos (Cuernavaca), and was later placed in the genus Chrysina ( Hawks 2001) . After revision of several specimens (10 males, 22 females) of different localities from the states of Mexico and Morelos of three collections (DJCC, IEXA, LLDC) we do not detect differences of the external characters and genitalia between both species, therefore we conclude that both represent the same species, and place C. aenigmatica as a junior synonym. Additionally, C. modesta and C. aenigmatica have identical 28S D2-5 and ITS2 sequences (D.C. Hawks, Riverside, California, United States of America, personal communication).
