Type: — CROATIA. Central Dalmatia: Isola di Pelagosa Grande (Vela Palagruža), Dalmazia centrale, 13 June 2005, Boršić s.n. (holotype CAT!; isotypes CAT!, ZAGR!) ( Figs. 18 View FIGURE 18 , 47 View FIGURE 47 ) .

Diagnosis: — Planta pubescens , dense foliosum secus caudiculas, foliis rugosis, spathulatis, retusis, revolutis margine, 1–3-nervis, interdum 5-nervis, scapis numerosis, robustis, erectis ad adscendentibus, rugosis, ramis sterilibus numerosis, inflorescentia reticulata, ramosa, spicis rectis ad curvatis, bractea inferiore ovata, apiculata, bractea superiore ovata, obtusa, calice tubo dense piloso, lobis triangularibus, acutis.

Description: —Plant perennial, 12–33 cm tall, pubescent (hairs up to 0.2 mm long), with robust tap-root. Caudices branched, 3–10 cm long, densely covered by leaves. Leaves rigid, rugose, pubescent, green, 1.5–8 cm long, 5–16 mm wide, spathulate, revolute at the margin, 1–3-nerved, sometimes with 2 secondary nerves, gradually tapering into a long petiole, retuse at the apex. Stems numerous, robust, erect to ascending, rugose, with numerous sterile branches, flexuous, fragile at nodes, very branched, diverging at the angle of 70–180°, internodes 3–15(–25) mm long, right to curved. Inflorescence reticulate, branched from the base.; spikes 10–35 mm long, straight to curved. Spikelets 5.5–6 mm long, 1–2 flowered, 2–4 per cm; outer bract 1.6–2.1 mm long, 1.5–1.9 mm wide, ovate, apiculate, totally hairy, with margin narrowly membranous, central part fleshy, acuminate; middle bract 1.7–2.1 mm long, 1–1.3 mm wide, oblong, bifid at the apex, membranous, hairy in the veins and between them; inner bract 3.7–4.5 mm long, 2.2–2.7 mm wide, ovate, obtuse, margin membranous, glabrous, 0.3–0.4 mm wide, and central part fleshy, densely hairy, 1.6–2 mm wide, apiculate, forming a triangular tip, 0.6–0.7 mm long, no reaching the upper margin. Calyx 4.6–4.7 mm long, exserted 1.5–2 mm from the inner bract, tube densely hairy, with 5 totally hairy ribs, reaching almost the apex of the lobes; calyx lobes 1–1.1 × 0.7–0.8 mm, triangular, acute. Corolla lilac.

Etymology: —From “Pelagosa” the old name of Palagruža island.

Distribution and ecology: —This species occurs in Palagruža archipelago in central Adriatic ( Fig. 29N View FIGURE 29 ), where it grows near the sea, at the base of the calcareous step slopes. Usually, it is a member of halophilous communities, which are replaced in the rupestrian sites by a chasmophilous vegetation.
