TYPE LOCALITY: U.S. S. R., Altaisky Krai, near Barnaul .

DISTRIBUTION: W. Europe to Yenesei River and Lake Baikal, south through Altai and Tien Shan Mtns.; west to Nepal, N. China (SW).

COMMENT: An isolated population in the Tien Shan Mtns., heptopotamicus, is considered a distinct species by some authors (JAJ and RSH). Formerly included gracillimus , which is regarded as specifically distinct by all Russian authors; see Corbet, 1978:19-20, who also included planiceps and thibetanus; but see Dolgov and Hoffmann, 1977, Zool. Zh., 56: 16871692, and Hutterer, 1979, Z. Saugetierk., 44:65-80. S. volnuchini may represent a distinct species based on its karyotype; see Orlov and Kozlovsky, 1971, Vestn. Moscow Univ., Biol., 2: 12- 16.
