DISTRIBUTION: E. Europe; S. Russia; Asia Minor to Israel.
COMMENT: Formerly included in europaeus ; but see Kratochvil, 1975, Zool. Listy, 24:297-312; Kral, 1967, Zool. Listy, 16:239-252; Orlov, 1969, in II All-Union Theriol. Conf., p. 6, Novosibirsk. OLR includes this species in europaeus , as did Gureev, 1979:164, and Gromov and Baranova, 1981:9. Includes roumanicus; see Corbet, 1978:14.
