Description. FEMALE. Fore wing 13.1 mm.

Head. Ventral tooth of mandible slightly longer than dorsal tooth. Clypeus apical area delimited by smooth border; clypeal margin with two small teeth. Antenna beyond flagellomere XI missing, white band with 6 flagellomeres.

Mesosoma . Mesopleuron with fine inconspicuous pilosity, 100% of cuticular surface visible, finely strigate. Subalar prominence remotely pyramidal, not edged longitudinally. Sternaulus very deep, crenulate. Sulcus between sternaulus and scrobe very weak, inconspicuous. Scrobe and sulcus between it and pleural sulcus sharply distinct ( Fig. 146). Posterior transverse carina of mesosternum absent. Lower metapleuron strigate-rugulose, coarse along pleural carina. Propodeum: area in front of anterior transverse carina distinctly alutaceous and with sparse pilosityrelated, shallow foveolate, subcrenulate along carina, including medially with a few short irregular ridges ( Fig. 162). Propodeal apophyses present as distinct scale-like structures; posterior transverse carina entirely absent between and beyond apophyses. Area behind anterior transverse carinae, including behind apophyses, arcuately and strongly strigate, except radially strigate around petiolar foramen. Fore wing in Fig. 187; vein 3-Cu 1.46 length of 4-Cu. Hind wing in Fig. 227.

Metasoma. Postpetiole medio-anteriorly with weak but distinct suboval concavity; dorsolateral and median dorsal carinae absent; petiolar spiracles in dorsal view not prominent. Ovipositor 1.28 length of hind tibia. Apex of lower valve with 13 teeth.

Color. Body main color black, widely covered by yellow areas; metasoma with yellow stripes. Lateral pattern as in Fig. 15. Orbital band very narrow between 1–2 h, but not interrupted ( Fig. 111); width on supra-antennal area and temple about 0.2 of interocular distance, narrowing abruptly at temple, ventrally covering nearly entire width of gena, almost reaching occipital carina, dorsally tapering. Base of mandible pale yellow; tentorial pit narrowly surrounded in black (appears as a dot); clypeus apical margin medially black, clypeus otherwise, clypeal sulcus and entire supraclypeal area yellow. Mesosoma pattern of large yellow areas as in Fig. 15. Pronotum dorsally along anterior margin, almost reaching lateral corner, with wide yellow stripe from side to side, not dorsally interrupted; dorsal margin along entire lateral view with elongate, irregular yellow stripe. Propleuron apex and lateral half yellow, mesally dark brown. Mesosternum mostly reddish brown (204,102,051), except medio-posterior face yellowish. Mesoscutum at lateral angle, near tegula, with a small irregular yellow mark; centrally, at level of tegula, with large suboval yellow spot. Axillar carina except posterior apex, scutellum except apex, and postscutellum, yellow. Propodeum as in Figs 15–16, medial longitudinal yellow stripe extending from central part to margin of petiolar foramen, narrowing from anterior to posterior end. Fore coxa pale yellow, except posteriorly light brown; mid coxa laterally pale yellow, mesally light brown; hind coxa dorsally yellow, latero-dorsally and meso-dorsally with a longitudinal black stripe, latero- and meso-ventrally and ventrally light orange; fore trochanter mostly pale yellow, trochantellus brown and yellowish brown; mid trochanter and trochantellus dorsally dark brown, otherwise yellowish brown; hind trochanter and trochantellus light orange, except mesally dark brown; fore and mid femora brown to dark brown, except ventro-mesally yellowish; hind femur black, except basal end orange; fore tibia yellow, mid and hind tibiae deep yellow; fore and mid tarsus with t1 mostly yellow and deep yellow respectively, t1 apex and t2–5 dark brown; hind t1–4 deep yellow, t5 dark brown, except latero-basally yellowish. Metasoma ( Figs 15, 97): Petiole laterally and a large dorso-apical spot yellow; T2–7 apical and lateral margin with wide yellow stripe, interrupted dorso-laterally on T2 and medially on T7; T8 laterally, except apex, widely yellow.

Morphological variation. Fore wing 9.8–16.2 mm. Ovipositor 1.28–1.34 length of hind tibia. Antenna with 26–27 flagellomeres; white band with 5–6 flagellomeres, starting at apical half of flagellomere V, or at flagellomere VI. Color: pale yellow or almost white instead of yellow; orbital band widely interrupted at malar space, from complete to entirely interrupted between 1–3 h. Mesonotum: lateral yellow mark from absent to large, wide, twice size of dorso-lateral stripe of pronotum; scutellum fully yellow; propodeal area in front of anterior transverse carina without medio-anterior yellow spot; hind coxa sometimes (13%) entirely orange, rarely (3%) mostly orange with large dorsal yellow area laterally, or with black stripe reduced to basal spot, or with black covering most of lateral side; about 50% of females with mid and hind femora mostly black, for the other 50% at least half orange to mostly orange; T7 apical yellow stripe medially fragmented or entirely absent in dorsal view.

MALE. Similar to female, except as follows. Antenna with 28–32 flagellomeres; white band with 6–7, starting with entirely white flagellomere IX or X. Sculpturing much weaker, towards smooth, but propodeum with posterior transverse carina sometimes complete, bell-shaped. Color: orange absent, replaced by yellow; mesonotum on smallest specimens without central yellow spot; propodeum medio-longitudinal yellow stripe sometimes (13%) absent or represented by small spot, but this is size-independent; hind coxa ventrally yellow, otherwise with triple stripe pattern, as on female; T2–7 yellow stripes complete, dorsally proportionally much wider than on female.

Host. Anisopodus curvilineatus White ( Coleoptera , Cerambycidae ) ( Sauer 1946).

Comments. Very similar to D. elegans , from which it is isolated by having the metasoma black with yellow stripes (vs. T2–8 orange) and hind coxa tricolor, dorsally yellow and ventrally light orange, with a dorso-lateral and a dorso-mesal longitudinal black stripe (vs. entirely orange). These two species are found sympatrically; see comments for D. elegans . Otherwise, females of D. bidens are easily recognized by the pattern of yellow marks on the propodeum, with a wide medio-longitudinal stripe and with yellow along entire length of pleural carina and around or at least in front of propodeal spiracle ( Fig. 16). A similar pattern occurs only in D. elegans .

Synonymy. Two homotypes of D. bidens Viereck , designated by H. K. Townes, were examined, and both fit within the observed morphological variation of D. crassipes , with which it is therefore synonymized. The specimens associated with these two names show only a few differences on the extent of yellow marks on the propodeum and of yellow stripes on T2 and T7, all highly unstable features that cannot characterize a species in this genus.
