2. Paradonus futilis ( LeConte, 1853) .
Cryptohypnus futilis LeConte, 1853: 488 ; Candèze 1860: 91.
Cryptohypnus pectoralis var. futilis ( LeConte, 1853) ; Horn 1891: 28.
Negastrius pectoralus var. futilis ( LeConte, 1853) ; Lane 1971: 20.
Diagnosis: See key above for diagnostic characters.
This species was described by LeConte (1853) from specimens collected in San Diego, California. Images of the holotype are available on the MCZC type database under the original species combination (https://mczbase.mcz. harvard.edu/MediaSearch.cfm?action=search&media_id=193933,193934,193935,193936,193937, accessed 7 Aug 2019). The pronotal hind angle has the carina connecting to the apex, and the two specimens in the LeConte collection (MCZC) are quite small, each being around 2.25mm. The female type has a faint band on the elytra near the apical one-fourth of the elytra, and the other specimen has completely testaceous elytra. The Sonoran specimens collected by Champion (BMNH) and reported under this name are not P. futilis , and represent an undescribed species. The full range of this species needs to be explored with more material.
