Kempnyia pirata View in CoL sp. n.

( Figs. 4–13 View FIGURE 4 View FIGURES 5 – 10 View FIGURES 11 – 13 )

Type material. Holotype, m: BR, SP, Campos do Jordão, PECJ, Córrego Galharada, 17/XI/1987, CGF, LGO, MJNF, GMC. Paratypes: 1 m, same data as holotype; 1 m, 1 f, 03–06/XII/1996, CGF, ASM. 1 Córrego Casquilho, 1 m, 1 f + ex., 26/XI/1986, CGF.

Description. General colour dark but with a conspicuous orange spot on distal third of wings ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ). Lappets and most of frons dark brown, M-line, genae and parietalia brown. Scape of antennae brown, pedicel brown and pale brown, next few segments pale brown, then progressively darker, most of flagellum brown. Palpi pale brown. Two ocelli. Postmentum brown. Pronotum dark brown, rugosities lighter. Meso and metanotum light brown to ochraceous. Legs brown, base of femora and apex of hind tibiae yellowish. Wing membrane infuscate except at base between R and CuA, from M to CuP until half the length of the wing and, more distally, an orange window (colourless in preserved specimens). Veins brown to colourless. Cerci ringed in brown and yellow.

Male. Forewing length 9.1 to 10.5 mm. Tergum 10 ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 – 10 ) mostly brown, lighter median and postero-lateral areas; sensilla basiconica ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 5 – 10 ) cylindro-conical. Subgenital plate ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 – 10 ) with basal corners moderately inflexed, disk light in colour but with a median slightly darker stripe. Hammer pear-shaped but apex truncate. Paraprocts ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 5 – 10 ) with minute sensillae distally and a subapical tooth. Penial armature ( Figs. 11–13 View FIGURES 11 – 13 ) with a pair of short hooks, not much curved and slanting outwards. Apical part dilated, compressed, gonopore a long dorsal slit. Dorsal side with hairs, ventral side with fields of microtrichia.

Female. Forewing length, 13.3 mm. Tergum 10 with a pattern similar to that of the male, but only with simple setae. Subgenital plate ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 5 – 10 ) covering most of sternum 9, a large median notch present. Sternum nine ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 5 – 10 ) with a pair of slightly sclerotized oblique bars.

Egg ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 5 – 10 ). Yellowish, oval, 0.42–0.45 x 0.22–0.24 mm.

Remarks. This is one of the few species of Kempnyia that lacks the median ocellus. The colour is distinctive, dark body and wing with an orange spot in the distal third of the forewings ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ), and recalls the colour of some peiratine bugs. All specimens were collected during the day with net or beating sheet, indicating a diurnal habit. The penial armature is very different from that of all other species in the genus, with its short hooks and the dilated but laterally compressed gonopore tube. The female subgenital plate is also distinctive with its large apical notch.

Etymology. Latin, pirata , a pirate. The name refers to the species’ resemblance to some Peiratinae bugs. It is used as a noun in apposition.
