Previously recorded from the southern United States to Peru, including several islands of the Caribbean Sea and the Costa Rican provinces of Guanacaste and San José ( Gundlach 1894; Champion 1898; Wetmore 1916; Barber 1923, 1939; Torre-Bueno 1923; Wolcott 1924, 1936; Drake & Harris 1933, 1934; Hungerford 1936, 1939, 1940; Kuitert 1942; Hynes 1948; Drake & Hottes 1951a; Poisson 1954; Drake & Maldonado-Capriles 1956; Cobben 1960; Alayo 1967; de Kort-Gommers & Nieser 1969; Nieser 1970, 1977; Polhemus & Chapman 1979; Henry & Froeschner 1988; Nieser & Alkins-Koo 1991; Manzano et al. 1995; Nummelin 1997; Peck 2001; Padilla-Gil & Nieser 2003; Bass 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010; Molano et al. 2005, 2008; Epler 2006; Molano & Camacho 2006; Deler-Hernández et al. 2007; Posso & González 2008; Bass & Silva 2010; Damgaard et al. 2010; Muñoz et al. 2010, 2012; Lanigan & Hyslop 2011; Padilla-Gil & Arcos 2011; Padilla-Gil 2012; Padilla-Gil & García-López 2013; Herrera 2014). It was collected in lentic habitats in Costa Rica between 100 and 833 m a.s.l., and museum material indicates its occurrence in the north Pacific region, without information about its habitats. Limnogonus franciscanus is herein recorded for the first time from Alajuela Province.

Cote Hydropower Project, “ Laguito ”, 678 m a.s.l., 21.XII.2006: 2 males ( MZUCR) . Guanacaste— Pitilla Station, 9 km S. Santa Cecilia, Guanacaste National Park, X 330,200, Y 380,200, 700 m a.s.l, XII.1993, (C. Moraga): 1 female (InBio Cat. #2545). Murciélago Station , 8 km S.W. from Cuajiniquil , Guanacaste National Park, X 320,300, Y 347,200, 100 m a.s.l., I.1994, (F. A. Quesada): 1 female (InBio Cat. #2556).
