Dasyhelea sp.

This genus of ceratopogonids needs revision ( Borkent and Spinelli 2007) and species are only identifiable by adults. At least 17 species are reported from the Caribbean ( Borkent and Spinelli 2007) and likely there are undescribed species as well. We found larvae in St. Thomas in water filled buckets in Estate Altona, and at the University of the Virgin Islands in stagnant water from recycle bins across campus, and from moss clumps on water pipes and in a concrete drainage behind the Classroom Administration Building. Curry and Curry (1971) also report this genus from artificial containers, ponds, and ghuts on St. John and St. Croix.
